CAMBRIDGE This already cramped new build garden was made even smaller by the addition of a conservatory. As the clients had children they wanted to retain as much lawn as possible in the design. On top of this I had to work around an existing shed on a concrete base in one corner. To make the garden seem bigger I used an egg shaped lawn at an angle of approximately 45% to the house. This orientated the garden from corner to corner, giving it as much length as possible and providing deep planting pockets in the corners. The trellis has been used to raise the fence height but also to make the ugly stepped fence line level, without infringing any planning rules. Using the light trellis in front of a dark backdrop foreshortens the view, making the house wall at the back and the uneven fences less obvious. The pond was an after thought on the part of the client, who did not ask for it until most of the hard landscaping had been completed. For budgetary reasons it had to be squeezed in without causing any thing else to be changed. Drainage was built in near to the house to take water from the patio as the site had a history of poor drainage. The lawn is also slightly raised and drainage has been built in to stop it from becoming excessively damaged by family use. Click on the images to the left to see larger versions |
