Cambridgeshire. December 2008

The owner of this townhouse wanted to do away with the small patch of grass which would not grow very well in this shady site. Consequently I was asked to incorporate a maze design into the paving.

This has been done using tumbled concrete sets in combination with an exposed aggregate finish to provide a good contrast. (Unfortunately this photograph, taken in the dark a few days before Christmas 2008, doesn't show this very well. I will replace it later in the year). The path through begins with the sets which have been inlaid into the buff paving of the path and patio, this leads the viewer into the puzzle.

There are several puzzles to solve here, you can find a route from any of the three entry points to the center or choose a route from any one of the entry points to any other.

Hertfordshire. September 2006

This house in Hertfordshire has been greatly extended and as a consequence the building became out of proportion with the small amount of formal garden at the rear.

After I had designed a series of individual garden rooms there was a large space between the house and the wood which lent itself to the construction of a maze.

Here I used a figure of eight as it suited the available space. It also allows for two quite different puzzles of varying difficulty to be used.

In this case, at the customers request, lleylandii "Castlewellan Gold" was used to plant the maze for it's speed of growth.
