Cambridgeshire. Spring 2008 The owner of this townhouse asked for an eco-friendly garden, reusing the existing slabs to save on landfill and incorporating a water butt for the shed roof. The grass is edged with wood and the gravel path will allow for natural drainage. The slabs were lifted, cleaned and re laid at an angle of 45% to the house in a staggered bond. This creates more interest and a greater sense of space. The path which originally ran along the left hand side directly to the gate has been replaced with one that curves around the garden. This again creates an illusion that the garden is bigger as the viewers eye travels with the path and not directly to the back fence. The client undertook to do their own planting which incorporates space for a small herb garden in specialy raised beds to provide good drainage.
